Taking into account the new funding, the total amount of direct American aid related to the fight against Ebola has exceeded $512 million. In doing so, the United States reaffirmed its role as one of the key donors to international efforts to contain the epidemic.
According to the State Department, additional funds will be used to strengthen surveillance, check people at entry points and borders, treat patients, as well as information campaigns among the population. The latter, as emphasized, are necessary to counteract the disinformation and distrust that persist in a number of affected areas.
The American authorities also noted the already achieved results of programs implemented with the support of Washington in the region. To date, they have allowed for 8.6 million medical examinations, informed more than a million people, supported the work of 180 medical institutions and strengthened the diagnostic capabilities of 11 laboratories.
In its official statement, the US government called on other international partners to increase their participation and financial contribution to the fight against the outbreak, the development of which is of particular concern, especially in DR Congo. Washington separately praised the measures taken by Uganda to prevent the spread of the virus on its territory, noting that the monitoring and control actions of the Ugandan authorities help reduce the risk of cross-border transmission.
As the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains the epicenter of the current Ebola outbreak, the United States declares its continued support for national health authorities and international organizations involved in the fight against the epidemic, which continues to pose a serious threat to public health in the region.
