Justice in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: the UN reiterates its support for reforms and the fight against impunity

Bruno Lemarquis, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Permanent Representative and Humanitarian Coordinator, met with Guillaume Ngefa, Minister of State for Justice, in Kinshasa on Wednesday to discuss strengthening cooperation between the UN and the Congolese authorities. According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice, the meeting provided the UN diplomat with an opportunity to express his appreciation to the Government of the Congo and to reaffirm the importance of partnership between the United Nations and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Lemarkis stressed that this long-term cooperation is focused on critical areas, including the fight against impunity, the promotion of human rights, the reform of the judicial system and the improvement of prison conditions. He stressed that strengthening the rule of law remains the main priority of the country's development. In addition, the UN representative praised Minister Ngefa's commitment to the fight against corruption, calling it the most important task for the future of the DRC.

The discussion also focused on the state of the penitentiary sector, especially in the eastern part of the country, where conditions of detention remain a source of serious concern. Both officials agreed on the need to continue efforts to improve the treatment of prisoners. In conclusion, Mr. Lemarkis reaffirmed the commitment of the United Nations to support the priorities of the justice sector, noting that judicial reform is an important factor in good governance and sustainable development of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
