The need to take measures to stop the sale of identity documents in Kenya

In recent years, there has been an increase in the illegal trade in identity documents in Kenya, which poses a significant threat to national security and the stability of Government structures. These documents, such as national identity cards and passports, become commodities on the black market, falling into the hands of criminal gangs, terrorists and illegal migrants.

The main problem lies in the weaknesses of the registration system and corruption among officials responsible for issuing documents. When an identity card can be purchased, it undermines public confidence in the state and creates conditions for fraud, identity theft and illegal participation in elections.

To deal with this critical situation, the Government needs to take drastic measures. First, the registration system should be fully digitized in order to eliminate the human factor and the possibility of manipulation. Secondly, it is necessary to strengthen control over the activities of employees of migration services and registration centers by introducing strict accountability mechanisms.

Penalties should also be increased for those involved in the illegal trade of documents, whether they are intermediaries or officials involved in corruption. Citizens should remain attentive and report any suspicious activity related to the issuance of personal documents.

The protection of national identity is a matter of sovereignty. Kenya cannot allow its documents to become a tool in the hands of those who want to harm the country. It is time to act quickly and decisively to restore order and security in the civil identification system.
